P2V Utility & Import with OVM 3.4 ISO

Aim:
With the below steps you can import a physical machine to a virtual machine hosted in Oracle VM.

Requirements:
  • Physical host going to hold the imported VM with P2V utility required to have enough RAM and CPU for the hosted application on machine to be imported
  • Physical host going to hold the imported VM with P2V utility required to have same and above free disk space available as the imported machine
  • Keep enough backup of the data on physical host to be imported

Steps:
  1. Insert installation disk of OVM 3.4 (any subversion is ok to go) in the concerned machine and boot it from CD
  2. Once boots up, enter “p2v” at the boot prompt
  3. When prompted for IP configuration add the guest machine (to be created) IP configuration. It should be same IP address as physical server that is to be imported (from this IP http server will start)
  4. Select the disks to be imported
  5. Enter new VM name and CPU, RAM details
  6.  A secure web server (HTTPS) is started. The IP address of the computer, and port number the web server is available on is displayed.
  7.  Access this web server in a normal browser and it will list vm.cfg file and .img disk image
  8.  Login to OVM manager and import this .cfg and .img file Import takes some time to complete.
  9. Once it is over, create a guest VM from this template and start the VM to test functionality OVM Manager >> Edit VM template name and remove disks attached >> Save >> Create Virtual Machine >> Clone from template >> Add disks imported >> Add Network >> Boot order Start VM >> Configure new IP address in guest (If using old IP, nothing to configure)
